A shelf is furniture at its simplest: a plane carried on brackets, uprights or the sides of a case. Medieval libraries laid books flat or chained them to lecterns, and upright rows of spines on shelves became common only from the 16th and 17th centuries. Glazed bookcases then became a feature of learned households. The 20th century favoured systems that could be rearranged. Dieter Rams's 606 Universal Shelving System (1960) hangs on aluminium wall tracks, Charlotte Perriand's Nuage shelving plays solid and open compartments against each other, and BBPR in Milan designed modular furniture for offices. Look for how the shelves resist sagging and whether they can be moved.
