The chest is the ancestor of nearly all storage furniture. It held clothes and valuables, doubled as a seat and could be carried when a household moved. In 15th-century Italy painted cassoni held a bride's goods, and over the following centuries chests acquired drawers, doors and stands, becoming chests of drawers, cupboards and wardrobes. Cabinets on stands, fitted with dozens of small drawers, housed collections of curiosities in 17th-century Augsburg and Antwerp.
Modern designers moved storage into the walls. Le Corbusier's standard storage units at the Pavillon de l'Esprit Nouveau (1925) replaced freestanding furniture, and George Nelson's Storagewall of the 1940s built cabinets into partitions. Gio Ponti, Charlotte Perriand and Phillip Lloyd Powell each designed storage that doubled as display. Look at drawer construction, especially dovetails, and at the hinges and locks.
